A Note from Our Founder, Leslie Cameron
My sister, Elizabeth Faust, died of brain cancer in 2002. One thing my sister taught me is to celebrate life, however long it may be. During Liz’s illness, she always had wonderful friends to help her with her battle. These friendships brought joy, laughter, hope, and strength. In May of 2002, Liz and I hosted a spa party for a few of the friends who had given her so much support. We gave them pedicures, manicures, and even hired a massage therapist to give the girls massages. We had door prizes and gift baskets for every guest. It was a night of pampering, laughter, and good food. But most importantly, it was a celebration of Liz’s life and a way for her to say “thank you” to the friends who had supported her throughout her illness.
After I saw how special this evening was to Liz and her girlfriends, I started wondering if there was a way to do this for other women. My neighbor and friend, Shara Aycock, joined with me in this vision and in June 2003, Confetti Celebrations was born.
The mission of Confetti Celebrations is to provide weekend spa retreats for women with cancer and their girlfriends, where they can be refreshed physically, restored emotionally and rejuvenated spiritually.
Our first retreat was held in the fall of 2003 on a large plantation home on the May River near Savannah, Georgia. We hosted three women with cancer, and each was able to bring two girlfriends. We had the ladies travel to a day spa in Savannah for their spa treatments. We learned a lot on that trip, and also picked up a key member of our team, Barbara Nindos, who was attending with her friend who had cancer.
It was back to the drawing board, and in the Fall of 2004, we launched our new program at a private home on beautiful Lake Rabun in North Georgia. We hosted five women with cancer and each was able to bring one girlfriend. We hired therapists to come into the home and provide the ladies with massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials. Over the years, we added Maria Lamia and Amber Smith to the weekend volunteer team. We were able to provide professional makeup application, hair cuts, wig styling, and even yoga!
Since 2003, we have hosted over 100 women in more than 15 retreats. We are looking forward to welcoming even more in 2013!
